MANEESHA PANIKER

Silk Route Abodes

SOUTH INDIA - Kerala, Cochin

Tradition, myths and untouched natural beauty meet here at Kayal, a resort hidden in a quiet island on Vembanad lake, India's largest lagoon. On a soul searching trip to this island, Maneesha Panicker, the founder of experiential travel outfit, realized she had to share the authenticity of this unexplored land with her guests. At Kakkathuruthu, the Island of Crows, she built Kayal, an intimate space where fisherfolk and farmers share their life with guests. Though not far from the ancient port city of Kochi, the island, connected only by traditional rowboats, is off the maddening rush of modernity. While experiencing the luxury at Kayal, you will be taken back to time when life was simpler.

You'll never truly experience a place, unless you plunge head long into its everyday life. And that's precisely what we offer at Kayal.

KAYAL ISLAND RETREAT

Maneesha’s latest project is Kayal, an Island Retreat in the backwaters of Kerala. At Kakkathuruthu - the Island of Crows, she has built an intimate two-cottage resort where fisherfolk and farmers share their life with guests. Though not far from the ancient port city of Kochi, the island, connected only by traditional rowboats, is off the maddening rush of modernity.  While experiencing the luxury at Kayal, you will be taken back to time when life was simpler.

To truly experience life on the island you would need to spend at least two nights or more with her at Kayal. That will give you enough time to enjoy the seclusion and get reacquainted with yourself.

On request, and subject to availability, she also welcome guests for just a day at Kayal. You could plan this as an alternative to a typical backwater ride in a houseboat. She'll treat you to a scrumptious lunch, followed by a walk through the village and a canoe ride.

Even as she designed the place for solitude, there's no dearth of things to do here. A 30-minute canoe ride and village walk are offered complimentary as part of your overnight stay.

You also can go toddy tapping, stargazing, cycling – and a whole lot more.
